TMT Taphole Opener at BF A during commissioning


The shutdown period between June and September of Blast Furnace A (BF A) was about almost four months. BF A produces two-thirds of the approx. 5 million tonnes per year hot metal production capacity at Linz site.

The participation of TMT in the modernization measures of BF A was already initiated in February 2017 by placing an order.

TMT scope of supply for this project consisted of delivery of one new TMT Clay Gun as well as refurbishment of four Clay Guns, three Taphole Openers and one Jack Dam Drill.

The Taphole Openers of all three tapholes have been equipped by the latest technology including installation of the new full hydraulic drill hammers type TMT-BBG HS 600. This innovation offers the advantage of switching between a high impact frequency mode and a high impact energy mode either in full automatic operation or in manual mode. At BF 5 and BF 6 the full hydraulic drill hammers type HS 600 are already in operation.

The common challenge of the tight schedule could be successfully met by a long and intensive preparation time and BF A was finally recommissioned with full success on Thursday, 27th September 2018.

Completion of refurbishment of TMT casthouse equipment is a further significant milestone of the close and technical cooperation between voestalpine Stahl and TMT which has already started in the 1970s.
